Hi there! I’m Kellie, the writer of Style the World. In place of a traditional FAQ page, I decided to pull together a fun facts page for those interested in learning a bit more about me and my background! I have included 5 fun facts for each of the following categories – travel, style, education & career, and my personal life. Thanks so much for taking the time to learn a little bit more about me!
I did not grow up traveling internationally with my family (in fact, most of my family has never left the U.S.). I went abroad for the first time when I was 17 on a 3-week trip organized through my high school – a Euro-trip to England, France, Switzerland, Italy, and Greece. That trip sparked my passion for travel!
I don’t have a favorite country, but the country I return to most frequently is Italy! I am absolutely obsessed with everything about it – the food, the people, the culture, the architecture, the museums, the wine – it is just so amazing every time I have the chance to visit! It is also the perfect destination to visit with ANYONE, as it is a fabulous place for a girls trip, a romantic vacation, or a family trip – there is something for everyone there!
Visiting Antarctica is at the VERY top of my bucket list! I am really intrigued by the icy landscape and the wildlife there. I am still in the process of saving for it + researching which company I want to go through, but I am hoping to make this trip a reality sometime in the next 2-3 years!
My travels have been all over the map – the countries I have had the pleasure of exploring so far (in time order) are England, France, Switzerland, Italy, Greece, Canada, Bahamas, Dominica, Brazil, Ghana, South Africa, Mauritius, India, Singapore, Vietnam, China, Japan, Spain, Croatia, Monaco, Belgium, Austria, Netherlands, Czech Republic, Mexico, Honduras, Cayman Islands, Iceland, Colombia, Australia, Portugal, Israel and Jordan. I have also been to several island nations, including Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao.
While it is often a hot topic of debate in the travel community, I love cruises! I have been on 5 so far – Greek Islands (3 days), ‘Around the World’ (3.5 months), Western Caribbean (7 days), Southern Caribbean (10 days), and Mediterranean (7 days). At the top of my cruise bucket list are Alaska, Antarctica, and the Norwegian Fjords. Cruising isn’t for everyone, but I truly feel so at peace while out on the water, and I opt for cruises over resorts when I want a relaxing trip!
Before I ever discovered my love of travel, I was obsessed with style and fashion (there was even a time when I dreamt of becoming a designer or working for a fashion mag). While travel is my truest and deepest passion, I still have a strong love + appreciation for style!
I would describe my style as simple + classic. Most days, you will catch me in simple, neutral, and casual wear, but I do love to dress up in colorful and fun looks on occasion (I especially love kicking my style up a notch when traveling to bright and warm places)! When traveling, I typically try to match my style to the destination so I can blend in a bit better whenever possible.
My favorite places to shop for clothing are LOFT (for business casual and everyday wear), Nordstrom Rack (for designer items at a discount), and local boutiques (for unique dresses and tops). I typically buy athleisure/workout tops from a variety of places (Target, Old Navy, etc.) but admittedly, am addicted to LuLuLemon leggings so I buy all of them there! For formal wear, my go to sites are Lulus and Revolve.
I don’t splurge on clothing often, but if I do, they are on neutral colored items (beige, black, camel, etc.) that are classic and are unlikely to go out of style. Most of my splurges will be on everyday staple items like purses, jewelry, and shoes, though I will splurge on a nice coat or sweater from time to time. As you might imagine from how much I have travel, the majority of my disposable income goes toward traveling, so new clothing purchases (particularly splurges) always come second to that.
While I love style, I understand the negative impacts of ‘fast fashion’. I have definitely slowed down my spending on new clothing in recent years, and am much more conscious when purchasing new garments. I never go shopping unless there is something specific I am looking for, and I make sure that I absolutely LOVE every new item I bring home! I do this to make sure every single item I add to my closet will be worn and kept long-term.
Education & Career
I graduated with my Bachelor of Science (BS) in International Business & Management (+ a minor in Art History) in 2014, and completed my Master of Business Administration (MBA) in December 2019.
My ultimate career goal is to become a college professor, so I plan on pursuing a doctoral degree (PhD) in Business Administration with a focus in marketing. I am taking some time off between my MBA and PhD studies to focus on working and traveling.
Although I travel frequently and love posting to this website and my instagram when I can, I do not blog or travel full-time. I work remotely in the field of marketing for a professional services firm. Remote work has allowed me to travel in comfort much more frequently than I would otherwise, which I love. For anyone who is obsessed with traveling that has a work-related skill set that is transferable to the online space, I highly recommend looking into remote work (and the “digital nomad” lifestyle if you want to take it a step further).
While I created Style the World in 2019, it was not my first travel blog. I created my first travel blog in 2011 but did not take it seriously or keep up with it (but boyyy do I wish I had)! I created a second one in 2015 but was too shy to put myself out there (and ultimately decided to delete it). I finally found the courage to put myself out there with this blog in 2019 – as I grow older, I realize more and more that life is simply too short to let fear (of failure, judgment, etc.) stop me from doing what I am passionate about!
I have always LOVED taking photos – so much so that I took photography classes in high school, and even considered studying photojournalism in college. While I ultimately opted for a business-focused education and career path, I love using this blog and my Instagram as a creative outlet for my photography!
I grew up in Akron, Ohio and moved to Tampa, Florida for college in 2010. I lived in Washington, D.C. for 3 years after graduating with my undergraduate degree but ended up moving back to Tampa for my husband’s work in 2017. Tampa is still our home base (for now at least)!
I am very happily married to my college sweetheart! We met in a business class during college in 2011, were engaged in 2016, and got married in 2018 at The Hemingway House in Key West, Florida. My husband is very supportive of my travels (whether it be a solo adventure, a family gathering, or a girl’s trip). He can’t travel as much as I can due to work, but he joins me on my travels whenever he can. So far, we have visited 6 countries together – Spain, Italy, Iceland, the Cayman Islands, Colombia, and Australia! (He is camera shy and is not a fan of social media, so you will rarely see him featured)
We don’t have children (and have no plans for them anytime soon), however, we do have a sweet fur-child named Sterling! He is a lab mix that we adopted from the Humane Society in Tampa 6 years ago. He is the cutest dog ever (he hates photos too so you won’t see many pics of him – takes after his father I guess 😉).
I have 4 siblings – an older brother, an older sister, a younger brother, and a younger sister. You might call me the ultimate middle child! I also am one of those people that sees their best friends as family – I have several close girl friends from high school and college that feel like sisters to me!
While it is obvious I love travel + style (hence this entire website), I am also obsessed with chardonnay, fancy espresso beverages, Mamma Mia, and 90s music (90s baby over here)!
Thanks so much for reading and taking the time to learn a little more about me! As always, feel free to reach out via my contact page or contact me on Instagram with any questions, or to simply say ‘hello’. Happy travels!
